What is a CAMA permit, anyway?

A Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) Permit is a regulatory requirement for activities conducted in coastal Areas of Environmental Concern (AEC) to ensure that development and land use are managed sustainably and in accordance with environmental protection standards.  

Does my project require a CAMA permit?

Your project may require a CAMA Permit if:

  • it is located within a North Carolina coastal county
  • falls within an Area of Environmental Concern (AEC)
  • it meets the definition of 'development'  

How soon can I get a CAMA permit?

That depends on a multitude of factors like project complexity, geographic location, permit type, and application completeness. How long is a CAMA permit active?

  • General Permits: Typically 120 days from issuance

Typically a building permit is also required by your local municipality prior to starting your project. No need to stress though!
